ABOUT
Over twenty years designing how people learn.
I came to instructional design the long way around, through the rooms where training actually gets used.
I’ve built district-level programs that had to work across dozens of sites and hundreds of staff. I’ve run training for an organization where the audience had not time for a course and real consequences if they got something wrong.
Along the way, I finished a doctorate in education, which is where the learning science comes from. My published research is on cost-benefit analysis in education - essentially, whether what we spend on programs produces what we claim.
What I kept seeing was training that satisfied a requirement without changing what anyone did. That’s the problem I design against now.
I start by finding out what people actually need to do differently. Then I build in Articulate Storyline 360 - branching scenarios, software simulations, interactive practice, where learners make the decision, see what it produced, and try again. Not slides with a quiz at the end.
